Odd Jobs
There are more odd jobs than I can count, and then some! For a gentler introduction to some of the odd jobs on this list, see: Introduction To Odd Jobs. For a more in-depth look at what defines so-called “odd jobs” — & for a detailed argument as to why they’re beneficial to play — see: On odd jobs.
Note that this list is inherently incomplete, because new odd jobs could potentially be invented. Moreover, most of the jobs in this list can be combined with others (e.g. a permarcher woodsman). APless, statless, and/or SPless builds are generally considered to be odd, but not all such builds are represented here (although some are, e.g. HP warriors are statless). Only pre-“Big Bang” (pre-BB) versions of MapleStory are considered here.
Useful definitions & clarifications
A splinter is a subjob of the job in question that doesn’t have its own entry in this list.
The location of a job is not typically considered to be part of the job per sē (that is, its location is adventitious). Nonetheless, for historic & social reasons, this list treats separately those odd-jobbed characters whose oddnesses are induced by location. For more technical detail, see: “Islanders & campers”.
A class is distinguished from a job in that the former is found directly in the game’s programming (beginner, rogue, outlaw, &c.), whereas the latter is a composite of class with other considerations like level, weapon choice, AP allocation, SP allocation, &c. that define the character’s “build”. A throughclass is a set containing a 2nd-grade class along with every class that it can possibly advance to, e.g. {cleric, priest, bishop}. The archetypes are: beginner, warrior, mage, archer, thief, pirate. That is, an archetype is either a 1st-grade class along with every class that it can possibly advance to, or else the set of all 0th-grade classes (including noblesse &c.).
When defining a job, stats are always in reference to base stats, i.e. AP allocation. Or, to say the same thing twice, we exclude from consideration any bonuses from equipment and/or buffs. We say that a job is Sless when its S stat is as low as possible for its archetype (e.g. 4 for a thief’s LUK, but 25 for its DEX). We say that a job is Sful when its S stat is nontrivially higher than it would be if the job were Sless (note that the term “nontrivially” is deliberately ambiguous). And we say that a job is pure S when all of its AP is allocated to S. Even when nominally disallowed, particular instances of a job are tacitly allowed to freely allocate into maxHP and/or maxMP (for survivability, &c.) to the extent that such allocation doesn’t destroy the job’s identity.
An ammoless job does not carry any ammo in the specific sense of Use items like throwing-stars, bullets, capsules, arrows, &c.. An SPless restriction applies only to spending SP of 1st & higher grades. Beyond this commonly-recognised threshold, SPless jobs may be realised more or less loosely, so long as the basic spirit of the restriction remains in observance.
A basic-attack is an attack of the most primitive sort, performable without the use of any skills, & bound by default to Ctrl ⎈. This is not to be confused with the term “basic attack” as used in skill descriptions of magical attacks.
For detailed documentation on empirically-tested skill usability, see: skill_usability.md.
A group is used here to collect together certain jobs that are in some way notionally related, but not in such a way that they’re encompassed by a single superjob. Some “notable equipment” info is given only under certain groups, & isn’t duplicated under its member jobs’ entries.

Notes
The camper experience varies significantly based on what version of the Training Camp they’re subjected to. Later versions introduced a more overt “Training Camp” æsthetic, with custom-textured & custom-built maps, the “green apple suit” that the camper is forced to wear, & different mobs than the Tutorial Jr. Sentinels of earlier versions.
Pre-BB versions of MapleStory that are recent enough to have Cygnus Knights will also have so-called roadies, named for the maps that they train on (“Empress’ Road”, the street name of the entirety of Ereve). This version of the camper is a noblesse, rather than a beginner, & is actually capable of obtaining some drops from the monsters that it trains on.
Pre-BB versions of MapleStory that are recent enough to have arans will also have so-called snowlanders. This version of the camper is only available to arans (or rather, proto-aran beginners), exclusively fights Tutorial Murus, & is otherwise similar to the original (explorer) type of camper.
Campers can only fight mobs that give 1 EXP each, thus making them extraordinarily time-consuming to train.

Notes
Magelanders are defined by their use of the Metal Wand, a level 18 wand with no class requirements that drops from Red Snails. It requires 55 INT & 20 LUK to equip.
Magelanders are the magicians of Maple Island, & can often be found casting Three Snails at everything in sight.
In addition to the INT & LUK necessary for their weapon, the magelander typically spends AP on maxMP to increase the pool available for casting Three Snails.

Location | Maple Island |

Notes
Because stats work a little differently on Maple Island, the term LUKlander is ambiguous: it may refer to the sinlander specifically, or it may be used more broadly for any islander whose primary stat is LUK.

Notes
Clawpunchers are deeply challenged, due to the woefully unfavourable damage formula of clawpunching. DEX is the clawpuncher’s main stat, because both STR & DEX contribute equally to their damage, whilst LUK contributes some damage, but less so than STR or DEX.

Notes
This job lacks the Keen Eyes skill, thus making it less “ranged” (i.e. it has less reach) than its name might suggest.
This job is typically pure LUK. Nonetheless, both STR & DEX contribute, & equally so, to claw damage. This is doubly true for the claw-wielding nonthief, as they lack Claw Mastery in any form.
This job is extremely WAtk-starved.

The dagger warrior is one of the oldest odd jobs, & the warrior–thief dagger series continues all the way from level 15 (Field Dagger) through the Reverse & Timeless Pescas.
1: WK/paladin elemental charges are available only via a delicate & not-entirely-usable implementation quirk: the WK must cast the charge whilst wielding an appropriate weapon (sword or BW), & then equip their actual weapon — at which point the charge is usable for its remaining duration.
2: Beholder can be summoned, but its passive mastery boost has no effect.

Wand warriors may be thought of as considerably weaker versions of dagger warriors, in some sense. The endgame weapon for the wand warrior is the Heart Wand (or Heart Staff, which is a confusingly-named wand), which they’re already using by the time that they hit level 54.

LUK warriors are somewhat similar to LUK mages in that they essentially play like their nonodd counterparts, but with considerably less damage, & with the benefits of high LUK. LUK warriors are, again like LUK mages, somewhat limited in their equipment choices because of their unusual AP allocation, but can nonetheless use class-appropriate weapons that enable them to make use of all their skills — see: STRless warrior.
LUK warriors are superior to their nonodd counterparts in both their defenses (due to their high AVOID), & in their accuracy (each point of LUK contributes 0.5 WAcc).

HP warriors deal damage primarily via Power Guard, & as such, typically want to lower their WDef as much as possible.
HP warriors are capable of defeating incredibly powerful bosses (e.g. Bigfoot) on their own at a low level, due to their obvious extreme tankiness, & their ability to deal guaranteed damage with Power Guard.

Permawarriors have the advantage of both single-target (Power Strike) & multi-target (Slash Blast) attacking skills. They’re also reasonably durable, unlike most other permafirsts, due to having the Improved maxHP Increase skill. Perhaps most characteristic of the permawarrior is the breathtaking array of weaponry & other equipment from which they choose. Nonetheless, permawarriors suffer from their complete lack of reach, mastery, accuracy (typically), & mobility.

Notes
The STR mage tends to attack almost identically to a STRginner, in addition to their skillset of nonattacks. For a more magically-oriented mage that still engages in melee, see: gish.
STR clerics are notable for the great utility shared by all clerics. STR fire/poison mages eventually get access to Poison Mist at the 3rd grade, which can poison monsters regardless of the caster’s MAcc. STR ice/lightning mages are by far the rarest of the three paths, due to having no distinguishing features.
Historically, terms like STR mage have been used to refer very loosely to any STRful mage, including gishes.
Although MP Eater only procs on magical attacks, it does so regardless of damage dealt — even on “MISS”es.

Notes
Gishes attack both with melee (similarly to the closely-related STR mage) and with spells.
Gishes naturally have access to their entire skillset, but only when wielding certain weapons. Spell Booster only works with wands & staves. Other skills merely observe the handedness (one-handed vs. two-handed) of the mage’s weapon; for information on which skills do or don’t work with two-handed weapons, see: claw mage.
Gish (arch)mages tend to get very good melee DPM out of certain wands & staves, e.g. the Elemental Staves. This is because such weapons benefit from Spell Booster, in addition to always swinging & thus multiplying the mage’s STR by a favourable amount (viz. 4.4).
Gishes can make good use of LUK, as it contributes to both their WAcc & their MAcc (& AVOID, for that matter).
Gishes, when played “properly”, aim to make their melee superior for single-target DPM, & their magic superior for multitarget DPM. Gishes with summons (e.g. Elquines) can even meet or exceed the single-target DPM of an equivalent STR mage in melee combat!
Gishes are perhaps the single most difficult job to play “properly”, as they have WAcc issues, serious MAcc issues, are very expensive to equip, and allocating AP is an incredibly sensitive & situational balancing act.
The term gish originated in Dungeons & Dragons terminology in the early 1980s.

The term LUK mage is sometimes used to refer to INT(!) mages that have some LUK in order to wear their equipment. For this reason, we here prefer the unambiguous term magelet.
Besides having much higher avoidability than other mage varieties, magelets also have different choices of weaponry: they do decent damage with claws (see: claw mage), and can equip weapons with high LUK requirements & low INT requirements, such as those listed above. For a few other equips usable by the magelet, see: gish.

Bowwhacking has a special damage formula that ignores all sources of mastery (e.g. Bow Mastery). Moreover, although it takes STR into account, its primary stat is DEX, meaning that the bowwhacker’s AP build & equipment don’t meaningfully differ from those of a nonodd archer.

The bowginner is an approximate answer to the question of what a permabeginner might look like if it were capable of wielding (cross)bows.
The bowginner may be played more or less loosely, depending on the player’s interpretation of the SP restriction. Attack skills are certainly uncharacteristic of the bowginner; on the other hand, The Eye of Amazon makes sense insofar as it enables the bowginner to be truly ranged. Under looser definitions, the bowginner may not even be a permarcher.

Because this job is defined by its weapon, MapleStory implementations that lack said weapon (e.g. MapleLegends) make it impossible.

The clawpuncher’s main restriction is ammolessness, which typically also means that they cannot use Shadow Meso: it attacks with the claw but without punching (i.e. it’s clearly “ranged”), & perhaps notionally uses “ammo” insofar as mesos are thrown out of the hermit’s inventory. Regardless, the clawpuncher’s damage-dealing capabilities are greatly augmented in the 3rd grade by either Shadow Web or Meso Explosion.
1: Claw Mastery doesn’t affect the damage of clawpunches, thus making the skill useful only for its passive WAcc bonus.

The clawginner mustn’t be confused with the besinner; whereas the besinner makes use of marginal event-only claws equippable by beginners, the clawginner is only a pseudobeginner, & can wield any claw in the game.
The clawginner is an approximate answer to the question of what a permabeginner might look like if it were capable of wielding any claw.
The clawginner may be played more or less loosely, depending on the player’s interpretation of the SP restriction. Attack skills are certainly uncharacteristic of the clawginner; on the other hand, Keen Eyes makes sense insofar as it enables the clawginner to be truly ranged. Under looser definitions, the clawginner may not even be a permarogue.

For skill usability info, see: brigand.
The claw bandit (= sindit sēnsū strictō) is not to be confused with the more typical use of the term sindit (sēnsū lātō) to refer to bandits who temporarily & opportunistically use claws during early 2nd grade; the clawdit is stuck using claws as their sole weaponry from level 10 ever onward.
The claw bandit hasn’t traditionally been treated as an odd job, simply because it encompasses little more than the standard way of playing bandits at the most relevant levels (viz. early 2nd grade). However, this cutoff point for combat-style specialisation — that is, the transition into a determinate throughclass, which is the universal cutoff point in all pre-BB versions of MapleStory — exists at the game-mechanical level, thus making it a category error to conflate this level of abstraction with the level of empirically-observed gameplay at which the sindit sēnsū lātō exists. As a result, although this perspective is undoubtedly historically useful, for the purpose of a mechanical classical definition, the claw bandit is no less classically odd than the dagger assassin is. There’s no contradiction in the fact that the sindit style is opportunistically played by those with otherwise no interest in odd jobs; this occurs with many odd jobs, as such a great number of them are powerful in their own right.

Notes
The DEXdit is not, strictly speaking, pure DEX as its name implies. Because STR & DEX contribute equally to their damage range, & because DEX has passive effects (AVOID, WAcc) that STR does not, the DEXdit naturally attempts to maximise their DEX. Nonetheless, their equipment often requires some STR, and both venom & Ninja Ambush scale with STR+LUK rather than with DEX (although venom does scale very slightly with DEX).
DEXdits have perhaps the most stable damage in the game; with maxed Dagger Mastery & maxed Savage Blow, the total amount of damage dealt per Savage Blow is effectively constant (for a given WDef).
The DEXdit typically has more WAcc, but less AVOID, than their nonodd LUK counterpart.
DEXdits tend to use weaponry similar to that of dagger warriors, because both are LUKless dagger-users, and because there are so many LUKless daggers made specifically for both warriors & thieves.

The blood dit trades off the large majority of their melee power in exchange for extreme tankiness. Because all their AP is spent on maxHP, & because they gain access to Meso Guard at the 3rd grade, the blood dit is virtually invincible. On the other hand, they’re essentially built around Meso Explosion, which thankfully does not scale with any of the CB’s stats, and also demands some tankiness so that the CB can get close enough to place & explode mesos.
In comparison to the HP warrior, the blood dit takes considerably longer to finally achieve their main attacking skill: Meso Explosion is a 3rd-grade skill, unlike the 2nd-grade skill that is Power Guard.

The LUKless assassin’s choices of claw are limited, but certainly usable. When opting for melee, however, the LUKless sin loses access to many skills; for info about which skills these are, see: bonksassin. For thief-specific melee weaponry, see: brigand.
In melee, the LUKless assassin plays like a more mobile permabeginner, with some neato utility skills. However, because they go the assassin route, LUKless sins are also quite strong with claws. In particular, Drain, Shadow Meso (which ignores the hermit’s stats), & Avenger are all fruitful skills. Lucky Seven & Triple Throw, on the other hand, are virtually worthless.
Note that Shadow Partner only functions when a claw is equipped & the hermit is throwing stars with it.

Notes
In principle, weaponlessness is the sole restriction that should be necessary to define the pugilist; in pre-BB MapleStory, characters of the pirate archetype are the only ones capable of “attacking” (sēnsū strictō) unarmed. Nonetheless, some nonpirate classes do have skills that aren’t attacks, & that therefore may be used unarmed, & yet still apply debuffs that deal nonfatal(!) damage. Primarily for this reason, the archetype restriction is included in the foregoing definition of the pugilist.
Because attacking unarmed is technically considered “one-handed”, the pugilist may choose to use a shield.
The unbuffed attack-speed category of the pugilist is 3 (“faster”). Speed Infusion lowers this to 2 (confusingly also “faster”; 2 is the lowest — i.e. fastest — possible category).
For various mechanical reasons, the pugilist has some of the least stable damage in the game — even less stable than the STRginner’s!
1: Only the active portion of Super Transformation is usable unarmed; the passive mastery boost has no effect.

The punchginner is an approximate answer to the question of what a permabeginner might look like if it were capable of wielding knuckles.
The punchginner may be played more or less loosely, depending on the player’s interpretation of the SP restriction. Under looser definitions, the punchginner may not even be a permapirate.

1: Gun Mastery grants only a WAcc bonus.
2: Note that summons (i.e. Octopus & Gaviota) are not attacks. Aerial Strike is an attack. Strictly speaking, Energy Charge touch-attacks are attacks, implying that a strict pistolwhipper must permanently maintain Energy Charge at level 0.
3: Transformation & Super Transformation are technically usable, but cause the pistolwhipper to be incapable of attacking. The passive mastery boost from Super Transformation also has no effect.

Notes
The begunner is an approximate answer to the question of what a permabeginner might look like if it were capable of wielding guns.
The begunner may be played more or less loosely, depending on the player’s interpretation of the SP restriction. Attack skills are certainly uncharacteristic of the begunner; on the other hand, purely passive skills like e.g. Bullet Time are not so clearly antithetical to the job’s spirit. Under looser definitions, the begunner may not even be a permapirate.
The begunner has no equivalent of The Eye of Amazon nor Keen Eyes, & is thus less “ranged” (i.e. has less reach) than its weapon might suggest.

Notes
Although pirates ordinarily may branch off in the direction of the brawler, a typically tanky class (see: Improved maxHP), they may instead branch off in the direction of the gunslinger — a typically defenceless class. As a result, permapirates are stuck with the lowest common denominator w.r.t. their defenses, & are thus quite fragile. They do, however, have a multitarget attack, & can deal no small quantity of single-target DPM with either Double Shot or Flash Fist.
Permapirates are unique amongst permafirsts in that their stats are inherently torn: STR is their primary stat in melee, but DEX is their primary stat at range.

DEX brawlers are often played as hybrid attackers, due to being reasonably proficient with guns.
Brawlers gain a whopping 0.9 WAcc per point of DEX, giving the DEX brawler the single highest WAcc of any job in the game, aided by WAcc bonuses from Energy Charge, Bullet Time, Knuckler Mastery, & their anniversary-event knuckles!
DEX brawlers also have the highest AVOID in the game, due to the fact that brawlers gain a whopping 1.5 AVOID per point of DEX. (This isn’t true in MapleLegends in particular.)

LUK buccs are essentially the pirate version of LUK warriors. However, they have a harder time getting equipped, due to the paucity of knuckles that lack stat requirements — see: STRless brawler. Moreover, the LUK bucc’s DPM (arguably excepting that of Demolition, which ignores DEF) tends to suffer from the lack of pre-DEF multipliers.
Although the LUK bucc may have a sing-songy name, they’re quite rare, because their avoidability is ironically much worse than that of the DEX brawler (although this isn’t true in MapleLegends in particular).
